Plan Ahead for Trick or Treat Buddies

Nadine Briggs

As Halloween approaches, it’s easy to get caught up in costumes, decorations, and candy, but don’t forget to plan ahead when it comes to trick-or-treating buddies for your child. Waiting until the last minute to find someone to go trick-or-treating with can lead to disappointment, and no one wants their child feeling left out on one of the most fun nights of the year.

Trick-or-treating is a low-pressure social event—no one expects everyone to become best friends that night. It’s more about ensuring kids feel included and have someone to enjoy the evening with, even if it’s just for a few hours. It’s important to reach out to other parents and plan ahead, so your child isn’t left waiting at the last minute, hoping for plans to come together.

I’ll never forget one Halloween when my son, who has ADHD, was excited to go trick-or-treating with his friends. He dressed up as a rapper, complete with a huge dollar sign necklace and feather hat, but we waited for almost an hour for his friends to pick him up. They never came. We ended up driving him around to find the kids he wanted to join, but it was a close call to salvaging the night.

This is why it’s so important to plan ahead and involve other parents if needed. Whether you’re arranging a trick-or-treat group or reaching out to a neighbor, try to make plans so that your child doesn’t have to trick-or-treat alone. Halloween should be full of excitement, not anxiety or disappointment. So, reach out now, make those plans, and help ensure your child has a spooky and joyful night filled with fun and friends!
