We recently hosted a party for the kids in our program, and two boys had an interaction that perfectly captured why I love teaching social skills the way I do.
One boy approached another and asked, “What day do you come to Simply Social Kids?” The other hesitated and did not answer. The first boy looked confused and eventually turned to me, asking, “What group is he in?” I could have told him. It would have been easy. But I did not.
That is a question I refuse to answer.
Instead, I said, “It looked like he was being friendly to you, maybe you could go ask him again.” And he did. He walked right over, asked the question, and the two ended up chatting about their groups. It was a small moment, but a meaningful one.
Sometimes helping means stepping back. It’s not always about giving the answer. It is about giving kids the chance to find it themselves. Watching that small act of bravery unfold reminded me that connection often starts with a single step forward.
