Closing this physical space in March of 2020 was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Thankfully, I was distracted by learning how to convert our unique program to an online platform.

I would return to this center while it was closed to check on things and get the mail. Honestly, those visits to this empty space were emotional and gut wrenching. I would stand there, feeling stunned, knowing that it would remain empty for an unknown amount of time. I never stayed too long because the weight of its emptiness was heavy on my heart. I hung on to this empty space knowing that I’d be back. It was simply too special and too important to relinquish. I would stand there and remember the anxious kids who learned to relax, the teens who flopped onto the beanbags knowing they belonged, the fun games we had made up that the kids looked forward to playing every week, and the events we hosted. I’d remember the Halloween and Thanksmasakah (our own holiday mash up) parties and the Awesome Night Art & Talent Shows that always ended in a joyous dance party. The excitement of kids as they’d burst through the door. And of course the friendships that formed here. So many friendships.

It’s a special place and an important place. I’m so excited that it’s ready for kids to return.
